Dear Runners, Details of the next head torch run are 7pm meet for 7:10pm start at DLI museum car park, Aykley Heads, Durham City map here. The route is approximately five to six miles over extensive urban parkland and will take about one hour. Parts of the route might be quite muddy and slippery, therefore grippy shoes are advised. There are some short and steep inclines too. Dogs are acceptable but there are some sections near roads and the railway, so a leash is advised.

In the event of severe weather the run might be cancelled, so please check for an e-mail before departing. Weather forecast at the moment is for a dry and cold night. Sorry for the late notice with this one, it was going to be held on the 13th to coincide with a near full moon but we've had to bring it forward a week. Hope you can all make it,

DFR Men's Team Success at the Hexhamshire Hobble
A superb turnout of ten DFR members ran the 15th Hexhamshire Hobble on Sunday, 7th December, 2008. DFR men won the Men's Team prize, with Jason Allison 3rd, Mike Mallen 6th and Graham Burns 8th. This is the first time in 15 years, that the winning men's team has not been Northumberland Fell Runners. Amazingly, this was Jason's first true fell run, so to come in 3rd in such company requires double congratulations. After a few more races to refine the fell techniques, he will be a formidable opponent - look out everyone! The other men who had good runs were Chris Fairless, Stuart Ferguson, Paul Kelly, and Matt Lynn. The girls were not to be outdone, with Ros Kelsey, Liz Oates and Denise Tunstall giving great performances. Again, this was Ros's first real fell race and she is proving to be a natural gazelle, who will do better and better as she learns the arts and crafts of fell running. The future of DFR is bright with these sort of performances. Mike says he anticipates NFR will be down in full force for the Ayhope Skyline to try to re-establish their reputation. We shall see.

Karen's Party Success
Karen reports that the DFR Social Event, held at her house on November 29th, was attended by 20+ members. The World Table Football Championships were the highlight of the evening, with much hilarity and incompetence. A raffle allowed members to win prizes of amazing value, astronomical education and complete uselessness but not all at the same time. The event resulted in £140 being raised for Club Funds. Thanks again Karen, it was a great effort and enjoyed by everyone there. Karen says thanks to everyone who came and contributed to the fun, good conversation and raffle prizes; without you there would have been no event!

Hamsterley Forest Car Park Annual Passes 2009
Annual passes for the Hamsterley Forest Car Parks for 2009 are now available for purchase. They are sold at the Visitor Centre or at Wood'n'Wheels Cycle Office. If you had one for last year, you may well have received a form of application, with the price stated as £35. Durham Fell Runners members have a concession reducing the price to £30 for the full year. Please will everyone who parks regularly, say for the Thursday night training runs, please obtain and display their pass. Otherwise we have complaints from the Chief Executive of forest operations, which is very emarrassing for the Committee.

Forum Back On Line
Webmaster John Nightingale has set up a Face Book Group to be used as the Forum and it is now available for members to use as they wish. The advantage of Face Book is that it has standard options for adding text, photos, messages, video, discussion topics, etc. To use the Forum, members need to be invited and will then have an account or be a member of the group. To be invited, please send your email address to john-in-athens@hotmail.com. Only DFR members will be invited to join this group. For those who are not familiar with using Face Book, the user interface is reasonably instinctive but please contact us if you need some help.

For the Ladies
We have received the following email.
Date: Mon, 19 May 2008 Subject: Sportsister - The Sports Magazine for Women
From: danielle@sportsister.com Attn: Club Secretary
Hi, we would like to introduce your female members to our new online sports magazine for women. As you know women's sport is given very little media coverage so we have decided to do something about this by launching a magazine ourselves - www.sportsister.com. Its online and its free and we need your help to make it a success. Aside from giving much needed media coverage to our women athletes, Sportsister also aims to encourage women to get involved in sport via our get started guides and by presenting sport in a female friendly style.
We offer solid informed advice, interesting articles, daily news, a forum and an extensive what's on guide focussing purely on the women's perspective.
We are also looking for groups of women to take part in our tried and tested guides, we supply 6 items from different brands and you tell us what you think - you get to keep the kit, have your say and see your group on sportsister. If you are interested please email me directly - we are currently looking for a group to test running t-shirts.
Lets get women's sport the coverage it deserves and more women and girls involved - help us spread the word !
Thanks for your time,
Danielle and Louise
