London Marathon - Club Application
As an England Athletics Affiliated Club, DFR is allocated one place in the London Marathon, on 25th April, 2010. If any member is interested in running and cannot get a place, please make contact via the web site. If there is a lot of interest, the Club will hold a draw for the place. The Club then makes the application, so we are told, although we have never done this before, to my knowledge.

3 Peaks Yacht Race and Scottish Islands Peaks Race - A Runners Opportunity
Hi Everyone, We have received the following email from Phil Newman. This sounds an amazing opportunity and if any one, or a pair, are enthused, please contact Phil direct as detailed below.
"Apologies for contacting you out of the blue but I am looking for a couple of runners who would be interested in competing in this years 3 Peaks Yacht Race and The Scottish Islands Peaks Race.
I have a confirmed entry for the PowerBar 3 Peaks Yacht Race starting on the 19th June 2010, a fast boat and full complement of sailors, but seek a pair of runners. Experience as a team at 3 Peaks or similar racing would be an advantage but not essential, however enthusiasm, commitment and a streak of lunacy are. Ideally runners should also be available for the Scottish Islands Peaks Race starting on the 21st May 2010 as a pre-cursor to the 3 Peaks Race, this race is probably as much fun as you can have in Scotland over a long weekend with running kit on.
Entries for both races are paid for, as is the boat, accommodation therein and sailing gear, therefore cost should be minimal for runners other than any specialist scoff and kit they require plus travel expenses to and from the start/finish though may also be able to help with that.
Further details are available from Phil Newman on 01904 442639 (Daytime) or 07710103398 (Mobile)
Email: phil.newman@btinternet.com or phil.newman189@mod.uk
Kind Regards, Phil Newman

Borrowdale Training Weekend, March 12-14th, 2009
Matt and Ros are planning a training weekend in the Lakes for the weekend of the 12-14th of March based at Borrowdale YHA. The plan is to run both Saturday and Sunday and there's plenty of options for runs straight out the hostel - The Scafell Range and The Newlands Fells are all nearby or, if the weather's bad, low level routes round Derwentwater.
They'd like to invite any other DFR members (and family and friends) who'd like to come along to join them for some or all of the weekend. No more plans than that at the moment, but hopefully this will be the first ever annual DFR on tour weekender. If you want to join them, book yourself in at the Borrowdale YHA and add your name to the thread on the DFR Facebook page.

Kielder Castle Race, January 16th,2010
Details of the Kielder race on Jan 16th are now on the NFR website, in "What's On" and a 'flyer' to this is given below.
Kielder Grey’s Summit Medium Race, Saturday 16th January, 1pm (~6 miles with ~1300 ft of ascent)
This is a new route for a one-off race. Start and finish at Kielder Castle. Race registration opens at 12 noon and the race starts at 1pm. Distance is approximately six miles with about 1300 feet of ascent. The first part of the race is on fairly good tracks and paths but the middle section is over pretty rough and, in places, boggy ground. Finish is via good but steep paths. The route will be fully marked with marshals at key points. Please see separate map.
IMPORTANT – all competitors MUST carry full kit as required by the Fell Runners Association. This means full body cover including hat and gloves, as well as a map, compass and whistle. A limited number of maps will be available for free on the day but they are not waterproof so you will need a suitable map case.
There is ample parking at Kielder. Please park in the proper designated car parks and not on verges or in the village. There is a charge for parking (£3) which is not included in the race entry fee. Remember to bring some change with you!
Facilities – we have kindly been given use of the Castle which means we have access to proper toilets as well as a warm and dry room for changing. You can leave belongings but this will be entirely at your own risk. After the race there will be hot drinks and biscuits available in the Castle. Bring a mug with you! The café (‘The Duke’s Pantry’) will also be open until 4pm.
Prizes – all the surplus money collected from race entry fees will be donated to charity. There will be no prizes awarded other than trophies for the male and female winners. In the event of bad weather the route may be changed. In the event of severe weather the race may be cancelled – please check NFR website.
Race entry - £5. Please bring correct change with you. Race run in accordance with the rules of the Fell Runners Association. Minimum age: 18 years on day of race.
CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS: This race has been selected as the first race in the NECAA & NEHRA 2010 Fell Running Championships and is also the first race in the Northumberland Fell Runners 2010 Club Championship. Medals for the NECAA 2009 Championship Winners and second and third placed runners will be presented after the race in the Castle.

Will and Steve's Headtorch Run, 27th October,2009
As usual, a healthy gathering of 14 runners, including a good turnout from DFR - Dawn, Dougie, 2 Steve's and Stu. On arrival two car loads of chav's made us wonder whether we would return to find tyreless cars. A number of cars also entered the car park to quickly disappear again - was this the local dogging spot? Only two dogs joined in with the runners for 7 miles of good running along variety of terrain. Thankfully, only the runners were tyred on return to the cars. Thanks to Will and Steve for another enjoyable night out. Apres running activity in the Causey Arch.

Bog swimming in Wales - the OMM 2009.
Well done to all those DFR runners who completed this year's OMM, held in mid Wales. The terrain could charitably be described as 'rough' and there were some entertaining bottomless bogs which were highly amusing as long as you weren't trying to extricate yourself from them. Good results were posted by all the DFR teams: Karen Partridge and Jeanette Sumler Hutchinson came 71st in the Short Score; Martin Harbisher and Ian Sumler Hutchinson 157th in the B Class, Willie Bell and Mike Mallen 39th in the Elite Class, Mark Bevan and partner 93rd in the Long Score and Alan Hunt and Patrick Bonnett 22nd in the Long Score.

A varied route with some fast moorland tracks, short steep downhills and climbs. You just had to watch out for Sir Nigel on the train track crossing. FRA Relays, October 18th Report
Three teams from DFR competed in last Sunday's FRA Relays, held near Ennerdale. Results are yet to be posted on the Web but we hear, from those who took part, that all teams (Women's, Men's Open and Men's Vet50) had great runs and enjoyed themselves in testing, claggy conditions, where knowing the local fells was a distinct advantage.
Well done to all those who took part and represented DFR in the event and particular congratulations to the Men's V50 team who won the silver medal, in what was strong competition (in all classes) - a great achievement.

Rab Mountain Marathon Race Report
DFR have been at it again. Four teams made up of DFR runners together with friends and family competed in last weekend's Rab Mountain Marathon.
The event is a relative newcomer to the fixtures list, being in its third year. This year it was held in the Howgill Fells, beginning and ending at Sedbergh, with an overnight camp looking up towards Cautley Spout. The format for the Rab is a Score event which places a premium on the ability to judge how far a team can travel within the allotted time and which checkpoints to target within that time (each having a differing points value). As 'points mean prizes', and there are brutal penalties for every 30 seconds that a team is over the allowed time for each day, this can lead to some tricky choices and, on occasion, and stretch teamwork and the collective sense of humour somewhat.
Testing their mathematical prowess, as well as their ability to run up and down some seriously steep slopes over the weekend, were four teams from DFR. Ros Kelsey and Matt Lunn were seventh in the Mixed Class, Alan Hunt and Dan Brison were 18th in the Male Vet Class, Ian Sumler Hutchinson was 33rd in the Solo Male Vet Class and Patrick and Catherine Bonnett were 14th in the Mixed Vet Class. Excellent results for all the teams, particularly for Ros in her first mountain marathon - well done to all.

DFR at Mourne Mountain Marathon
Two members of DFR travelled 'Across the sea to Ireland' to compete in the 30th two day Mourne Mountain Marathon. In a triumph of misguided optimism over fitness and technical competence, Alan Hunt and Patrick Bonnett doggedly completed the Elite Class, finishing in 7th place (behind some alarmingly young teams) in a total time of 16 hours and 10 minutes (about the same time that they then spent at the airport waiting for their delayed flight home). The weather was good over the weekend that the event was held, but the terrain hard, which meant that running was difficult, particularly on Day One. Both Alan and Patrick hope to regain the use of their legs soon and possibly even be able to walk within the next two to three weeks.......

Clean sweep for DFR at the Bowes Show and hot weather at the Lake District Mountain Trial
DFR members turned out in force to support the Bowes Show last weekend. Nine of the thirteen runners in the 10k Trail Race were DFR members and perhaps unsurprisingly, DFR did well. Denise Tunstall of DFR was the first lady home, Mike Mallen was first Male (V50), closely followed by Brian McCready and Liam Armstrong of DFR closely behind him. All the members of DFR enjoyed the course, despite the hot and still weather. There was also success of another kind for DFR at the Show with Patrick Bonnett coming first in the Men's Cake Class and winning the JG Raine Cup for
the Industrial Produce Section for the self same cake - demonstrating once again the integral role that cakes play in the diet of every fell runner.
The following day four members of DFR travelled to West Cumbria to compete in the Lake District Mountain Trial. The Trial regarded as "a severe tests of route choice, navigational skill and stamina in difficult mountain country" went north from Eskdale towards and beyond Scafell, returning via Hardknott. Steve Lumb and Andrew Henderson ran in the Men's Trial (16 miles and 7,000 foot of climb) whilst Steve Gustard and Patrick Bonnett ran in the Short Trial (10 miles and 3,500 foot of climb). In the Men's Trial Steve Lumb as 53rd with Andrew Henderson failing to finish the course. In the Short Course Patrick Bonnett was 14th and Steve Gustard 58th - good efforts by all concerned, particularly Andrew and Steve Gustard who were taking part in their first Trials over courses that were generally acknowledged to be hard, with good views and high temperatures (and not an ice cream salesman in sight).

Remainder of Mountain Marathon Season
The next two months see the climax of the mountain marathon season. DFR members will be active in all of these. This weekend, three members of DFR will be competing in the 56th Lake District Mountain Trial, this year starting from Eskdale. This solo event is regarded as the classic 'blue riband' mountain orienteering event of the year and (hopefully) will be graced with better weather than last year which forced the first cancellation of the event in over 50 years. The following weekend sees the Mourne Mountain Marathon in Northern Ireland where DFR will be again field a team for the third year in succession, whilst the last weekend of September (and a little closer to home) is the Rab Mountain Marathon, this year to be held in the Howgills - which 11 years ago was the scene of the notorious 'Howling Howgills' Karrimor Mountain Marathon but surely 'lightening can't strike twice'.......?
Which leads nicely on to the final event of the year - the now infamous OMM, which last year attracted a couple of minutes on the national news when held in Borrowdale due to the odd Autumn shower. This year the event is to be held in the Elan Valley in mid-Wales - a location characterised by bogs reputedly sufficient to swallow elephants, tussocks designed to break ankles and general 'testing terrain'.
In anticipation of what promises to be a fun filled weekend, Durham Fell Runners are holding extra OMM training nights every Thursday night after the normal sessions which begin at 7pm at Hamsterley Forest Visitors Centre. All are welcome to this and our regular sessions which now include a regular 'DFR on tour' event every month where we visit different areas of the county to train (note that head torches are now required for all evening sessions). Full details regarding the training schedule can be found on the website.

Report on Phoenix Long 'O' August 22/23, 2009
This year's (the 14th) Phoenix Long 'O' was held recently over two days in the Coquet Valley in Northumberland. Various DFR members, past and present together with wives and children took part on differing days and in various classes. On the Saturday, Alan Hunt and wife Sarah went round the D Class, Patrick Bonnett ran the C Class and Ian and Jeanette Sumler Hutchinson ran the B Class, whilst Catherine Bonnett accompanied Emily and Helen Bonnett on the Junior Long 'O' course. All enjoyed a glorious sunny day, great views and some interesting courses.
On the Sunday......it rained......Catherine Bonnett ran the C Class, two thirds of which she managed to do in the dry before the heavens opened and Ian and Jeanette ran the second day of the B Class and completed most of the course before they were forced to retire.
Despite the weather, everyone enjoyed themeselves on what was, as usual, a well organised and friendly event organised by Newcastle and Tynside Orienteers

Rab Mountain Marathon September 26/27, 2009
This year's Rab Mountain Marathon location has been announced. It will be held in the Howgills, starting from the People's Hall in Sedbergh. The area was last used for a similar event (the Capricorn) a few years ago, the Saunders in 1993 and the location of the infamous 'Howling Howgills' KIMM of 1998 which many connoisseurs regard as even more unpleasant than last year's OMM. Patrick and Stu are holding an 'Explore the Forest' navigation training event on Thursday 3rd September, starting as usual at 7:00pm. We'll be out for about an hour as usual, starting from the Hamsterley Forest Visitor Centre using a specially prepared Orienteering map designed in association with Northern Navigators Orienteering Club. There will be a £1.00 charge per map. Bring your own compass if you have one, if not we'll have spare ones to borrow for the session. Also bring a whistle and - important to remember - wear full body cover ie long trousers and a long sleeved top if you want to avoid scratching yourself.
This will be a low key event, the aim simply being to improve map reading skills and get to see some bits of the Forest that perhaps you haven't visited already (or previously ran past too fast to notice!) Patrick and Stu will be on hand to offer advice on navigation techniques.

Moffat Mountain Navigation Challenge
Alan Hunt and Patrick Bonnett took part in the Mountain Navigation Challenge on 18/19 July. The event - a classic two day Score type mountain marathon - is small and low key with a maximum of 20 teams competing. This year the event was
held in the St Mary's Loch and Manor Valley area of South Scotland, near Moffat, which last saw a mountain marathon in 1994 when the (then) KIMM visited. This year 12 teams took part in the event - running for a maximum of seven hours on Day One and five hours on Day Two. Despite a few unjustified complaints from Alan as to the 'Wendy House' nature of the competition tent and its structure when faced with (admittedly) slightly windy conditions at the overnight camp and consequent lack of sleep, the pair finished in third place overall and enjoyed their visit to this quiet and unfrequented area.

Durham Fell Runners Enjoy the Sunshine
Members of DFR have been active 'making hay while the sun shines'. A number of DFR's runners displayed their talents for multi-tasking, taking part in the inaugural IROC (Run, Orienteer, Cycle) event organised by local off-road running shoe company, Inov-8 which was held around the old Eastgate site in upper Weardale over the weekend of 18/19 April. Competing in various teams, and taking part in two fell races, two orienteering events and two mountain bike races, Michael Lumb finished in third place in the Men's Under 23 class for both the fell race and night orienteering events and third overall in the Men's Under 23 class - an excellent result. The DFR father and son pairing of Steve and Michael Lumb helped their team take eighth place overall in the team category. One other member of DFR, Steve Gustard also took part, helping the Durham Devils team take 12th place overall in the team category. Well done to all those taking part in this local multi-discipline event.

Club Coaches Wanted
DFR Coaching Team. WANTED - NEW MEMBERS
Due to the increasing number of attendees at the regular Thursday night training sessions, we need to build up our coaching team to maintain the quality and safety of the training programme. Are there any Closet Coaches out there in DFR land? If so, would you like to help out on a Thursday, or at our occasional Tuesday and weekend sessions we have during the year? Anyone interested, please come and speak to Stu. Any one who thinks they have what it takes to be a coach, and would like to start training to become a coach, again talk to Stu, who will support and point you in right direction. The Club are now looking at ways of applying for financial support for coaching, available from English Athletics. Future goals are to build on the current programme of our senior session, include more specific coaching information on the website and set up a Junior section.

Mountain Marathon Training begins for Durham Fell Runners
The profile of mountain marathons has risen considerably since the now infamous Original Mountain Marathon (the OMM) received worldwide (largely inaccurate) media coverage last October. This is one of a series of such events which occur throughout the year. Based on a two day format they involved fell running/orienteering in mountainous areas, with teams of two navigating over distances up to marathon length each day, depending on the course chosen. The events also have the 'added excitement' of requiring participants to carry all their gear for two days and camp out in a remote location at the end of the first day.
The number of such events is slowly growing and demand for places has also increased this year, presumably as a result of press coverage media (with the events appearing in articles with titles such as "Twenty extreme challenges to do before you die"). One such newcomer is the Highlander Mountain Marathon in April which will be held in the Highlands at a location yet to be divulged.
Mountain marathons require a certain skills set (some argue primarily based upon the ability to forget the inclement weather and pain of previous events and the capacity to run with bruised toenails). In order to hone these and other skills, DFR will be arranging additional training sessions which will be held after the usual Thursday night sessions which are held at Hamsterley Forest, beginning at the Visitor's Centre at 7pm (Head Torches still necessary).

Tim's New Zealand Adventure
Tim Makin went on holiday to New Zealand last year. He spotted a 36 mile race in the mountains and, being "Ultra" Tim, couldn't resist having a go. He ran a great race and was second UK finisher in a very big field. Unfortunately, he fell during the race, cracked a few ribs but soldiered on to the end. And that's why he's not running at the moment. Commiserations, Tim, I know how excruciatingly painful cracked ribs are. Tim's full report here

Will's headtorch run 6th January
Another very enjoyable and social evening run around Aykley Heads near Durham City. Our very own Steve Gustard led a dozen runners from NFR, Elvet Striders and DFR (Ros, Matt, Dougie, Tim, Jeremy and Stu) around his local area. Meeting at the DLI museum, we were led over ice, snow, cobbled lanes, tussock, and well-made paths with plenty of hills to keep us moving. Moving we needed to as temperatures were well below zero.
Will is arranging another evening run sometime in February over Waldridge Fell.

Appreciation to Karen
In recognition of all the work that Karen puts in for the Club, the Chairman presented her with a token of our appreciation at the start of the Ayhope Skyline Race. Gerry had pointed out that she is always there at the races, ensuring registration goes smoothly and then marshalling. All members will know that she organises a Christmas do, which raises funds for the Club, as well as giving those who attend a really enjoyable social evening. She also organises the Club Dinner each year near Xmas, which involves mountains of work booking the venue, letting everyone know, collecting deposits, talking to the caterers etc, etc. Thanks, Karen, we really do appreciate it, although we don't say so very often.
