Has Big Sport Lost Its Way?

Am I alone in thinking that when a sport becomes “big”, it somehow ceases to be a sport? This begs the question, of course, of how you define a sport. There is an idea I’m searching for, which is connected with show business. If the endeavour becomes a spectacle, played out in front of huge numbers of spectators – or any number which exceeds the number of participants, say – it becomes show business. It is done for the audience, “the fans”. And that way leads to domination by money, sponsors, advertising and control by television. That is where the Olympics and professional soccer have gone.
